On this visit, I didn't go inside the Hall, instead concentrating on the gardens and capturing plenty of exterior views of this extraordinary building. Designed by the celebrated architect Sir John Vanbrugh in the early eighteenth century, Seaton Delaval Hall was created for Admiral George Delaval and became the home of the famous 'Gay Delavals', a family renowned for their entertaining lifestyle, theatrical performances and practical jokes. We'll explore the formal gardens, the Parterre, the wider grounds and the different views of the Hall, while discovering how the landscape and architecture work together. The Hall has had a fascinating and often turbulent history. A devastating fire in 1822 left much of the building ruined, and the estate later underwent major conservation and restoration work. Today, Seaton Delaval remains one of Northumberland's most distinctive historic houses, surrounded by beautiful gardens and countryside.
