Khadijah (RA): The Journey to the Cave of Hira | Part 8

Before the first revelation, before the angel appeared in the Cave of Hira, and before Muhammad (PBUH) understood what was about to change his life forever, there was a period of preparation. In Part 8 of our Khadijah (RA) series, we explore the final months before revelation: the true dreams experienced by Muhammad (PBUH), his growing love of solitude, his repeated journeys to the Cave of Hira, and the mysterious practice of devotional retreat known in the early sources as tahannuth. The authentic narrations describe Muhammad (PBUH) spending several nights in worship before returning to Khadijah (RA) for provisions and then withdrawing again. But this is also part of Khadijah (RA)’s story. Long before she became the first person to believe in Muhammad (PBUH), she was already making space for a spiritual journey neither of them could yet fully explain. His retreats were not separate from their marriage; he repeatedly returned home to Khadijah (RA), took provisions, and returned to Hira. We also examine what the historical sources actually tell us—and what they do not tell us—about Muhammad (PBUH)’s worship before revelation, the meaning of tahannuth, the commonly mentioned six-month period of true dreams, and why we should be careful not to read later events backwards into his experience.
