Outpost Harry, Korea, 1953: eight nights in June when most of a Chinese division was thrown at one small hill north of Kumhwa, five weeks before the Korean War armistice. 📍 On the night of the tenth of June 1953, a Chinese division came across the valley north of Kumhwa, at the southern foot of the Iron Triangle. Its target was Outpost Harry, a hilltop about four hundred and twenty-five yards in front of Line Missouri, held by the 15th Infantry of the U.S. 3rd Infantry Division. The order was to hold it at all costs. For eight nights, company after company of the 15th Infantry and the 5th Regimental Combat Team, and finally the Greek Expeditionary Force battalion, took turns on the crest, under more than eighty-eight thousand artillery and mortar rounds. The hill was held. This is the story of the men who held it, Sgt. Ola Mize, Pfc. Charles Johnson, Cpl. Donald Menken and the Greeks who called the hill Haros, and of what the eight nights were really buying under the rules both sides had accepted at the truce talks in November 1951. ⏱️ CHAPTERS 00:00 Outpost Harry 01:14 The Last Summer of the Outpost War 05:53 Four Hundred and Twenty-Five Yards 10:27 Ten Days of Warning 14:50 The Night of the Tenth of June 20:56 Baker Company 25:26 A Fresh Company Every Night 30:04 The Greeks on Haros 33:45 What the Hill Was Held For 39:47 The Name in Honolulu - - 📚 Every story on The Outpost War is told with respect for the men who fought in Korea.
