Every Sunday at ten in the morning the music goes on first.
Always the music first. Before anything is moved or touched or cleaned. Mina puts it on warm, slightly old, the kind of music that sounds like it came from a decade before any of them were born. Then the washing machine. Then the futons carried out to the balcony to air. Then the broom. Then the kitchen. Then the windows and the table and the bookshelf and the bathroom.
They do not talk about who does what. It simply became true over time. Mina sweeps with the energy of someone who has a personal grievance against dust, singing every word of every song on the playlist. Hana cleans the kitchen every surface, including the ones that do not look dirty. Sachi does everything else the windows, the table wiped in slow careful circles, the bookshelf dusted with the small brush that lives on the second shelf specifically for this purpose.
At some point the cooking begins overlapping with the cleaning. Hana starts the midday meal while the sweeping is still happening. The smell builds through the second half of the morning a reward nobody designed but everyone responds to. The cleaning goes faster when something is cooking. The something cooking goes better when the kitchen has been cleaned first.
When it is done they sit on the floor around the low table and eat slowly.
Not the way they eat on weekday evenings when there is studying to get back to. Sunday eating is different. The meal extended by the satisfaction of having earned it. Mina talks the week's accumulated observations and opinions all released at once over whatever Hana made. Sachi listens. Hana eats and listens and occasionally says one thing one quiet precise thing that is always the most important thing said at that table that Sunday.
Then the laundry comes in off the line. Then the futons come back from the balcony. Then the afternoon opens up Hana reads, Mina falls asleep on the clean floor, Sachi writes at the small desk with the amber lamp on.
The apartment smells of clean surfaces and cooked food and laundry dried in the city air.
It is the same every Sunday.
It is never exactly the same.
There were Sundays when the week before had been brutal and the cleaning happened in quiet no singing, just the music and the tasks. On those Sundays the ritual carried them when they could not carry themselves. The apartment was clean at the end regardless. The food was ready. They were here. That was enough. It was always enough.
💭 For everyone who has ever turned a chore into a ceremony. For the person who always puts the music on first. For the Sunday that repairs the week. 🧹
