Our climate and biodiversity are in crisis. Ending native forest logging could significantly help both these crises.
Our work over the last 18 months has been focused on protecting areas of the forest that are about to be logged. This work will continue over the next 12 months, as we try and safeguard areas of core habitat and protect old-growth forests.
In addition, we will focus our efforts on trying to stop an new scheme that could act as a rescue package for a dying native forest logging industry, keeping it going for decades to come.
The application of Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) to native forest operations would completely negate the climate benefits of protecting forests or reducing logging. When you stop logging you reduce carbon emissions, but ACCUs would turn them into ‘credits’ to be sold to the fossil fuel industry, who could increase their own emissions by the equivalent amount.
If our campaign can forestall this ACCU rescue package for native forest logging, that would bring two million hectares of forest areas into play for permanent protection. After that we would work nationally to end native forest logging and to restore our remaining tall forest landscapes to an eventual pristine condition.
