Rockwall County is updating its Thoroughfare Plan to prepare for continued growth and evolving transportation needs. This long-range plan will guide future roadway connections, preserve key corridors, and support safe, efficient travel across the County. This update builds on the County’s Strategic Plan 2050 and the 2019 Thoroughfare Plan, incorporating current data, community input, and regional coordination. Why Updating the Thoroughfare Plan Matters Rockwall County is experiencing ongoing growth and development. In 2017, when the last County Thoroughfare Plan efforts began, Rockwall County’s population was over 96,700; today, in 2026, it is around 135,500; and by 2050, it is projected to be 245,000. This rapid growth underscores the need to plan now. Updating the plan ensures that transportation strategies reflect current conditions and are based on the latest data, leading to relevant project and program recommendations. What Happens Next The survey input we received will help validate the technical analysis's findings, and the analysis will support the development of the first draft of the updated Thoroughfare Plan. Later this year, we will receive the first plan map draft and the first report draft. We will keep you informed about the date, time, and location of the upcoming town hall meeting planned for January 2027. Follow the progress at: https://rockwallcountytexas.com/1419/... On October 13, 2026, County Engineer Erika Bridges and Transportation Planner/Project Manager Brian Crooks presented a progress report to the Commissioners Court during the Regular Meeting.
