Why do people in Reykjavik keep their windows wide open on freezing winter nights, while less than an hour away, people once grabbed electric heaters off the shelves like it was Black Friday?
Iceland lives by a different set of rules. About nine out of ten homes here are heated with hot water straight from the ground, so heat is simply not something Icelanders have to save. In this video, we look at 13 things they do because of it: sidewalks that melt their own snow, football pitches that refuse to freeze, hot tubs that UNESCO calls debating parlours, a warm beach in the North Atlantic, greenhouse tomatoes and bananas near the Arctic Circle, rye bread baked in the earth, and the Blue Lagoon, which began as a power plant's waste water.
And at number 13, the day in February 2024 when a volcanic eruption cut the hot water pipeline, and a country that never had to think about heat was suddenly thinking about nothing else.
Which of these would you want in your own home? Tell me in the comments.
