At the absolute heart of this contemporary landscape lies Macedonia Square (frequently referred to as the main independence square), a sprawling pedestrian hub dominated by the towering, 22-metre-high Warrior on a Horse monument. Stretching out from the square is the city's most iconic landmark: the Ottoman-era Stone Bridge. Built in the 15th century under the patronage of Sultan Murad II, this beautiful multi-arched structure spans the Vardar River and serves as both a literal and symbolic bridge connecting Skopje's modern, European-style center with its deeply historic past. Crossing the bridge transports you instantly into the Old Bazaar, the second-largest Ottoman-era marketplace in the Balkans after Istanbul. The bazaar is a captivating labyrinth of narrow cobblestone alleys, traditional craft shops, bustling teahouses, and historic caravanserais that still echo with the trading spirit of the Silk Road. Perched elegantly on a plateau just above the bazaar is the Mustafa Pasha Mosque. Built in 1492, this architectural masterpiece features a soaring 47-metre minaret and an incredibly well-preserved structure that miraculously survived the city's catastrophic 1963 earthquake, remaining a serene crown jewel of Skopje's Islamic heritage.
