Dalia project: The importance of floodplain forests

Floodplain forests, a natural habitat of lower river courses, have a fundamental and irreplaceable function in the water regime of the landscape. They can retain large amounts of water, thereby slowing down the flow of a potential flood wave and releasing water into the landscape in drier periods. At the same time, they are a refuge for a variety of specialized plants and animals. However, if we do not ensure regular flooding of floodplain forests, their continued existence is uncertain due to climate change and excessive pumping of groundwater to supply the human population. Experts from eight countries of the Danube River Basin Region focus on the future and management of floodplain forests in the Dalia project.
