Special thanks to @aekstasic for recommending this song :)
Był sobie król is one of Poland's most beloved lullabies. It tells the tale of a king, a page, and a princess who are eaten by a cat, a dog, and a mouse. But don’t be too sad because in the end the author reveals that the king, page, and princess were actually made of sugar, gingerbread, and marzipan.
Lyrics:
Już księżyc zgasł, zapadła noc.
Sen zmorzył mą laleczkę.
Więc oczka zmruż, i zaśnij już,
Opowiem Ci bajeczkę.
Więc oczka zmruż, i zaśnij już,
Opowiem Ci bajeczkę.
Był sobie król, był sobie paź,
i była też królewna.
Żyli wśród róż, nie znali burz,
Rzecz najzupełniej pewna.
Żyli wśród róż, nie znali burz,
Rzecz najzupełniej pewna.
Kochał ją król, kochał ją paź,
królewską te dziewoje.
Królewna też kochała ich,
kochali się we troje.
Królewna też kochała ich,
kochali się we troje.
Tragiczny los, okrutna śmierć
w udziale im przypadła.
Króla zjadł kot, pazia zjadł pies,
królewnę myszka zjadła.
Króla zjadł kot, pazia zjadł pies,
królewnę myszka zjadła.
Lecz żeby Ci, nie było żal,
dziecino ma kochana.
Z cukru był król, z piernika paź,
królewna z marcepana.
Z cukru był król, z piernika paź.
English Translation:
The moon has gone out, the night has fallen.
Sleep has overcome my dolly.
So close your eyes, and fall asleep,
I will tell you a story.
So close your eyes, and fall asleep,
I will tell you a story.
There once was a king, there once was a page,
and once there was a princess.
They lived among roses, they knew no storms,
A thing of the utmost certainty.
They lived among roses, they knew no storms,
A thing of the utmost certainty
The king loved her, the page loved her,
this royal young lady.
The princess also loved them,
The three of them loved each other.
The princess also loved them,
The three of them loved each other.
A tragic fate, a cruel death
Was bestowed upon them.
The king was eaten by a cat, the page was eaten by a dog,
And the princess was eaten by a mouse.
The king was eaten by the cat, the page was eaten by the dog,
And the princess was eaten by a mouse.
But so you won't feel so bad,
My dear baby.
The king was made out of sugar, the page out of gingerbread,
and the princess out of marzipan
The king was made out of sugar, the page out of gingerbread,
and the princess out of marzipan.
