Lovecraft on Film: Showing the Unshowable

How can cinema show a horror that language can barely describe? This video essay follows H. P. Lovecraft from Providence and Weird Tales to nine screen adaptations. We explore his life and literary methods, the filmmakers and actors who transformed his stories, and the practical effects, performances and production histories behind the films. We also confront the racism within his legacy and ask which fears an adaptation inherits or changes.
