The village was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 with 22 households and two mills. Its name is thought to come from Anglo-Saxon words meaning 'brushwood on a hill'. One of its most interesting landmarks is the 12th century Church of St Peter, which stands apart from the main village, surrounded by fields. The churchyard contains the graves of 49 servicemen associated with the former RAF Little Rissington airfield. The airfield opened in 1938 and later became home to the famous Red Arrows aerobatic team. A stained glass window in St Peter's Church commemorates this aviation history.
