My mother washed for eight people at a stone sink in Guadalajara, her arms in the water every day of her life, and her hands were the softest in the house until the very end. She never owned a jar of cream. She had a sábila plant in a coffee can on the windowsill, warm water she tested with her elbow, and a little oil before she got dressed. Here is her trick, and the seven habits that do the real work around it.
THE TRICK
🌵 La sábila: cut a low outer leaf, stand it cut-end down 10 minutes so the bitter yellow sap drains out, slice it open, and rub the clear gel on dry spots at night. Patch-test on your wrist first.
THE EIGHT
1️⃣ La sábila, the plant that waters itself (comfort-sized: it soothes, it does not cure).
2️⃣ Lukewarm water, never hot. The elbow test. 5 to 10 minutes.
3️⃣ The oil goes on WET skin: pat dry, then a few drops of coconut or sunflower oil before the steam leaves the room. Skip olive oil on babies and on eczema skin.
4️⃣ Soap only where it is needed, plain and unperfumed. Dry your hands completely every time.
5️⃣ Glicerina con agua de rosas: 1 spoon glycerin to 3 or 4 spoons rose water, on damp hands.
6️⃣ The air in the house: a pot of water on the stove, wet laundry inside, a clean humidifier, the heater a little lower.
7️⃣ Drinking more water will not fix dry skin (unless you are actually not drinking enough). Keep the water in from the outside.
8️⃣ Vaselina on the heels and hands at night, with cotton socks and gloves.
The honest word: everything here is comfort, not medicine. Red, weepy or scaly patches that keep coming back, cracks that bleed or turn red and hot, itching that keeps you up at night, or dry skin with tiredness, feeling cold, or a thirst that will not quit: see a doctor. And if you buy aloe gel in a bottle, skip the ones with alcohol near the top of the label.
Who profits: the perfumed body wash that strips your skin, the lotion that fixes what the body wash did, the night cream, the serum, the special hand cream and the special foot cream, every one with a refill next month. Nobody makes a dollar from a woman with a plant in a coffee can, a spoon of oil and a jar of vaselina.
Tonight, do one: a lukewarm bath, pat dry, and a spoon of oil on damp skin.
What did YOUR mother put on her hands at night? Tell me, and your county. I read every one.
