Vocal: Pandit Bhimsen Joshi
Pandit Bhimsen Gururaj Joshi (4 February 1922 – 24 January 2011) was one of India’s greatest Hindustani classical vocalists and a towering exponent of the Kirana gharana, renowned especially for his powerful, expressive renditions of khayal, as well as bhajans and abhangs. Born in the Gadag region of Karnataka, he developed a deep passion for music from childhood and, at the age of eleven, left home in search of a musical guru. After travelling to several important centres of Hindustani music, he eventually became a disciple of Pandit Sawai Gandharva, under whom he received rigorous training in the guru-shishya tradition. Joshi gave his first public performance in 1941 and went on to develop a distinctive singing style marked by a powerful voice, remarkable breath control, precise intonation, emotional depth, and exhilarating taans. His repertoire included celebrated ragas such as Miyan Ki Todi, Darbari, Puriya Dhanashri, and Shuddha Kalyan, while his devotional singing brought Hindustani classical music to a much wider audience. He performed extensively across India and internationally, including tours of Europe, North America and Afghanistan. In memory of his guru, he helped establish the Sawai Gandharva Music Festival in Pune in 1953, which grew into one of India's most prestigious classical music festivals. He also became widely known beyond the classical concert platform through devotional recordings and his participation in the iconic national-integration song “Mile Sur Mera Tumhara.” Over his illustrious career, he received numerous honours, including the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan, Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship, and ultimately the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honour, in 2008. He passed away in Pune on 24 January 2011, leaving behind an extraordinary musical legacy through his recordings, disciples, and enduring influence on generations of Hindustani musicians.
