Kayak fishing at Skaguay Reservoir, Colorado

During the fall season of 2020, I decided to take a short trip up to Skaguay Reservoir, near Victor Colorado. Phantom Canyon Road, an old narrow gauge railroad route built in 1894, connected Florence and Cripple Creek to allow easier transport of gold ore. The Florence and Cripple Creek Railroad was eventually converted to a gravel road, what we now know as Phantom Canyon Road. This road is not paved and is very narrow over a stretch of thirty-three miles. The speed limit is 20 miles per hour and vehicles over twenty-five feet are not permitted. This road is well maintained and I had no issues taking my two wheel drive sedan during dry conditions. About half way up the canyon, I found myself immersed in steep drop-offs, narrow passages carved through the mountains, and hundreds of aspen trees with golden leaves. When I arrived at Skaguay Reservoir, I spent several hours from sunrise past noon fishing from my kayak. Skaguay Reservoir is stocked with 'catchable' Rainbow Trout and also has a small population of Northern Pike.
