Tom Jones and Engelbert Humperdinck were made by the same man. Gordon Mills discovered Tom in a club in the Welsh valleys, renamed Engelbert, and chose the songs that made them both stars. Now they have not spoken in about forty years. At 86, Tom has said exactly where he stands: "There's nothing friendly about him and I. We fell out years ago. He's tried, but I won't talk to him." At 90, Engelbert says the opposite: "To this day, I would embrace him if he ever put his hand out to me." And he admits something strange. He still does not know why. We go back to the song Tom recorded first and let go, the one that made Engelbert a star overnight. Then come the manager who was best man to one of them and the maker of the other, the day Engelbert walked out, and the death after which the silence began. We look at the message Engelbert says he sent when Linda died, the cruel remark about Tom's voice, and the hand he is still holding out. And we answer the question in the title, using only what each man has said in his own words.
