Watch these veteran Civil War battleground maneauvers as a CSA commander in Grand Tactician: The Civil War, 1861-1865. Manage your armies, infantry and artillery corps like a master strategist. Manage Grand Tactician with this look at the Confederacy's mid-game challenges. We examine the strategic map and management.
BACKGROUND:
With news in Richmond of the Union procuring superior weapons technology, a massive strategic shift was agreed and undertaken by CSA high command. One of these changes was to order the Army of Kentucky and the Army of Tennessee to begin operating more aggressively against the Union corps to their front.
The 44,000 strong AoT, now under the command of the capable and redeemed CSA General Albert Sydney Johnston, while moving north to strike into southern Ohio toward Cincinnati, has instead been beset by 55,000 Union troops marching south to stop him. It is the newer federal Army of Illinois, under the command of Joseph Hooker.
There are fears about the Union forces bearing upgraded arms like the Prussian needle guns and upgraded cannon, but Johnston has hastily set his army about digging into a strong position well south of the Ohio River and of Covington, KY. All hopes are Johnston can stop the Union forces cold and then call up Earl Van Dorn’s “Army of Kentucky” to then deliver a devastating counter-attack.
It would appear the mood in Washington, D.C. is dogged determination as public opinion of this “War of Rebellion” in the South continues to ride at dismal lows. Federal armies continue moving aggressively, most recently, back into northern Virginia near Harper’s Ferry and Winchester, VA. CSA armies in the east have been ordered to take a staunch defensive posture, using terrain and strong entrenchments, plus 50 new 1-pdr rapid fire Williams Guns to create a formidable obstacle for George Thomas and the Union’s new “52nd Army”.
