The UK Driving Theory Test checks that learner drivers understand the rules of the road, traffic signs, and safe driving practices before they take the practical driving test. It is based on the official The Highway Code and guidance from the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA).
1. Multiple-Choice Section
The first part of the theory test contains 50 multiple-choice questions about driving knowledge. Topics include road signs, speed limits, hazard awareness, motorway rules, and safe driving behaviour. You must answer at least 43 questions correctly to pass. The questions are based on the The Official DVSA Theory Test for Car Drivers and the **The Highway Code.
2. Hazard Perception Section
The second part tests your ability to recognise hazards while driving. You watch 14 video clips showing everyday road situations and must click when you spot a developing hazard. A developing hazard is something that may cause the driver to change speed, direction, or stop. The maximum score is 75, and you need 44 points or more to pass.
3. Purpose of the Theory Test
The theory test ensures that learner drivers understand road safety before they drive independently. It helps reduce accidents by making sure drivers know how to react to hazards, follow road rules, and drive responsibly.
4. After Passing the Test
When you pass the theory test, the result is valid for two years. During this time, you must pass your practical driving test or you will need to retake the theory test.
5. Importance of Studying
To prepare for the test, learners should study the The Highway Code, practise mock tests, and watch hazard perception clips. Understanding the rules helps drivers stay safe and confident on the road.
