The Indo-Pacific Sergeant feed on zooplankton, benthic algae, and small invertebretes.  Adults live in coral reefs, tide pools and rocky reefs. Larva of this species live in the open sea. It is found in tropical and subtropical waters. Depth ranges of 1 to 15 metres are where people encounter this fish. È una specie gregaria che forma banchi sparsi. Si ciba di zooplancton, invertebrati bentonici e materiale vegetale. Le uova sono deposte sul fondo e vengono sorvegliate dal maschio. Le larve sono pelagiche.
