Aaron Copland - El Salón México

05.03.26 – Portland Youth Philharmonic celebrated the Season 102 finale at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall with a vibrant performance of Aaron Copland’s El Salón México. Composed between 1932 and 1936, El Salón México was inspired by a popular dance hall Copland visited during his travels in Mexico City. Drawing upon traditional Mexican folk melodies, the work combines energetic dance rhythms, vivid orchestral colors, and moments of sweeping lyricism. Under the direction of Musical Director David Hattner, PYP musicians delivered a performance marked by rhythmic precision, warmth, and infectious energy. From the work’s playful exchanges to its exhilarating conclusion, the orchestra brought Copland’s colorful musical portrait vividly to life. Follow PYP!
