St Vincent cruise port guide — there is no beach you can walk to from the pier. That one fact decides the whole day: ferry an hour south to Bequia for white sand, or stay on St Vincent for the gardens, the fort and the Pirates of the Caribbean set. This guide covers both, with the timings that make or break the ferry plan.
Ships come alongside right at the edge of Kingstown, so the capital is a ten minute walk. Settle three things: the Bequia ferry, what you do with the island if you stay, and how you handle unmetered taxis.
🚢 Getting Around
The berth takes two ships; a third anchors and tenders. Tourist desk, duty free and craft market at the terminal, town ten minutes on foot. Taxis have no meters — read the official rate card at the terminal, agree the fare and whether it is per person or per car, and agree the whole day if you are going up the coast. The Bequia ferry leaves a dock walkable from the ship, takes about an hour, runs several times daily and costs the price of a lunch return. Currency is the East Caribbean dollar, pegged to the US dollar, and US cash is taken almost everywhere.
🏙️ Top Highlights
The botanic gardens, fifteen minutes from the pier, were laid out in 1765 and are among the oldest of their kind in the Americas — and one tree there ties the island to the Bounty. William Bligh, four years after the mutiny, sailed back to Tahiti on HMS Providence and landed 678 breadfruit plants here in January 1793; a sucker in the gardens is believed to descend directly from them. Fort Charlotte sits 600 feet above the harbour with the best view on the island, and most of its guns point inland — the French had already taken St Vincent in 1779 by landing somewhere else, and the other threats were the Kalinago and a rising on the estates below. Up the leeward coast, 45 minutes out, Wallilabou Bay still holds the Port Royal set from the first Pirates of the Caribbean film, with Dark View Falls another half hour on.
🍴 Local Food & Culture
The national dish is roast breadfruit and fried jackfish — breadfruit roasted until the skin blackens, served with a whole fried fish. Callaloo soup, saltfish and rotis are the others, and the covered market in Kingstown is where to watch it all being bought and sold. The beer is Hairoun, after the Kalinago name for the island, meaning land of the blessed.
🎯 Smart Cruise Tips
If you are doing Bequia, go to the ferry dock and read the board yourself before committing — you need a morning sailing after your ship clears and an afternoon one with room to spare, and the ferry is not your cruise line's problem. And the sand here is mostly dark volcanic: the nearest beaches at Villa and Indian Bay are fifteen minutes south by taxi.
❓ COMMON QUESTIONS
Is there a beach within walking distance of the St Vincent cruise pier? No. The nearest are Villa and Indian Bay, about fifteen minutes south by taxi, and the sand on St Vincent is mostly dark volcanic.
Can you do Bequia as a day trip from a St Vincent cruise stop? Yes, if your ship is in early and out late. The ferry takes about an hour each way from a dock near the pier, runs several times daily, and gets you to Princess Margaret Beach in about fifteen more minutes on foot.
Where is the Pirates of the Caribbean set in St Vincent? Wallilabou Bay, about 45 minutes up the leeward coast. Parts of the Port Royal set from the first film still stand in a working fishing bay.
St Vincent is a port where everything worth seeing is spread along one slow coast road, or an hour away by boat. That is why so many visitors choose local tours: good value, smaller groups, and timing built around your sailing. Options are linked at the top.
