Last week, US inflation data—specifically the CPI and PPI figures—were released. However, these figures did not provide the market with any strong signals that would dampen expectations of a rate hike by the Fed. On the contrary, the surge in oil prices further heightened inflation concerns. Consequently, the interest rate futures market is currently pricing in an 86% to 93% probability of a 25-basis-point hike this week. However, the real story here goes beyond just Wednesday's rate hike. The market will now be watching for the signals Fed Chair Kevin Warsh provides regarding the future outlook. If his message suggests that this is merely a one-time hike, gold could see a relief rally. Conversely, if the signals indicate further rate hikes and a prolonged hawkish stance from the Fed, gold could remain under pressure. This is because higher interest rates imply potentially higher returns on US bonds; in such a scenario, gold—which yields no interest—may appear less attractive to investors.
