Go on, love — open your freezer and have a proper look. Half empty, forgotten peas at the back, something you meant to use weeks ago… and meanwhile good food keeps ending up in the bin. In this video, I’m sharing 15 old-fashioned British freezer tricks that helped families waste less, make food last longer and save money long before anyone called it meal prep. Some of them are simple. Some of them might surprise you. And one of them can completely change how much space you have in your freezer. You’ll learn how to: 🥛 Freeze leftover milk in ice-cube trays 🥔 Turn leftover mash into freezer portions 🧀 Freeze grated cheese without it clumping together 🥧 Keep homemade pastry ready to use 🥚 Freeze leftover egg yolks properly 🫐 Freeze berries without them turning into one solid block 🍗 Make stock from leftovers and freeze it in useful portions 🍌 Save overripe bananas for baking 🍞 Turn stale bread into breadcrumbs 🥕 Blanch vegetables before freezing 🌶️ Stop ginger and chillies going bad 🥩 Freeze reduced meat before it goes to waste 🥧 Keep a homemade pie ready for busy days 📦 Freeze soups, stews and sauces flat to save space 📝 Keep a simple freezer list so nothing gets forgotten again One of my favourite tricks is number two: freeze it flat. Instead of filling your freezer with bulky tubs, put soup, stew, bolognese, mince or leftover curry into freezer bags, lay them flat on a tray and freeze them thin. Once they’re solid, they stack neatly like books, take up far less room and thaw much faster too. And then there’s the simplest trick of all: A scrap of paper and a pencil taped inside the freezer. Write down what goes in. Cross it off when it comes out. That little habit can stop you buying food you already have and forgetting what’s buried at the back. The whole idea is simple, love: Waste less of what you already paid for. Because every bit of bread, cheese, meat or veg that goes in the bin is something you’ll probably end up buying again. So tonight, take ten minutes, clear out the true mysteries, move the oldest food to the front and write down what’s actually in there. You might be surprised how much food — and money — is already sitting in your kitchen. And tell me in the comments: what did your mum or nan always freeze that people don’t seem to do anymore?
