In the early hours of 23 January 2003, the Finnish cargo ship Camilla lost her engine 445 kilometres east of Newfoundland — dead in the water, rolling in a rising sea, with a full Atlantic storm on its way.
Sixteen men were on board. Between them and safety stood one helicopter: a CH-149 Cormorant of 103 Search and Rescue Squadron, flying out of Gander. The arithmetic was brutal. A refuelling stop on an offshore rig. A dash across 292 kilometres of black ocean. And at the ship, a hard limit — seventy-five minutes of fuel and daylight to get every man off a deck rolling forty degrees, five minutes a man, before the light and the fuel ran out together.
They did it in seventy. This is the true story of the Camilla rescue — verified against the official Finnish investigation report and the Canadian search-and-rescue record.
