A judge stops Tyreek Hill's lawyer in front of the jury in the Behind Closed Doors trial. It is his second warning to the lawyers in one reading.
This is Day 5 of Lakeeta Hill v. Tyreek Hill, a civil trial in Miami-Dade County. Keeta Hill, his wife, is suing the NFL star over eight allegations of what she says happened behind closed doors during their marriage. Tyreek Hill denies every one of them. Nothing has been proven, he is not charged with a crime in this case, and the only people who decide it are the jurors. The whole trial is one fight: her account told now, against the records made at the time.
This clip is one of those records. Tyreek Hill's lawyers read the jury the sworn deposition of a crime scene investigator, the one sent to an Orlando hotel on January 21, 2024 to document and photograph Keeta Hill. You are not watching her testify. A stand-in reads her answers from the witness stand, so what you hear is her deposition and not live testimony. What she said under oath: at that moment she saw nothing to document. She told Keeta Hill to call back or go to her own doctor if anything showed up later. Nobody told her what to find or what to leave out. Then the jury sees the photographs she took.
That is when the room gets loud. Two lawyers argue across the courtroom about whether these are the photographs from the deposition, and Judge Spencer Eig cuts in: "Thank you both for shouting across the courtroom." The reading ends. Keeta Hill's side asks to read three questions of its own from the same deposition, and the judge turns to a lawyer on Tyreek Hill's team at the back of the room. You will not see that lawyer. The man at the lectern is reading for Keeta Hill's side. The judge calls it "shouting from the back of a courtroom" and says this is "a witness that is not yours." Then: "No, no, no. Stop, stop, stop. It's not appropriate behavior." And when it keeps going: "Please do not do that, sir." A lawyer says "they did not provide designations," the notice lawyers give of which parts of a deposition they plan to read. The judge answers, "I overrule the objection," and calls a sidebar. The sidebar is off the record, so it is not in this clip. When the lawyers come back, the three questions are read.
Keep one thing straight. The judge is running his courtroom here. He is not ruling on the case, and a lawyer being stopped tells you nothing about whether any allegation is true. But look at what the argument was over. The three questions go to how little this investigator could say about when: she does not know when the alleged altercation occurred, and her part was limited to taking the photographs. So what does a jury do with a record made at the time, once it hears that? I am not the jury and neither are you. Only the jurors decide.
