Dive the Kensho Maru in Chuuk Lagoon.
This 384-foot Japanese passenger-cargo ship, built in 1938 and later pressed into Imperial Navy transport service, was towed to Truk for repairs after earlier damage. Caught at anchor during Operation Hailstone in February 1944, she was bombed and torpedoed, settling upright with a slight list.
The main deck lies around 80 feet, while the famous cathedral-like engine room—one of the lagoon’s most accessible and photogenic—drops to about 90–100 feet. Explore its multi-level machinery, tools still hanging on the walls, and the surrounding holds that hold remnants of her cargo: plumbing, valves, fittings, and scattered artifacts left from her final days under repair.
Outside, dense schools of reef fish dart through the coral-covered structure, pursued by hunting tuna and bigeye jacks that cut through the blue.
A classic Chuuk wreck dive—history, open engine spaces, and lively marine action.
