I just wrapped up a fifteen month series paying tribute to Doc Watson songs, in the monthly welcome videos for my school of bluegrass vocals on @artistworks. This was to commemorate Doc’s centennial in 2023 and highlight for my students his riveting vocal style, vast repertoire, and enduring influence. I was fortunate to have the help of some amazing special guests including several fellow ArtistWorks instructors What a crew! Thanks go out to all of them for being so generous in sharing their time, thoughts, and music. Here’s the rundown, in chronological order:
1. Chris Eldridge — Blue Railroad Train
2. Pete Wernick — Deep River Blues
3. Andrew Marlin — Stone Wall (Around Your Heart)
4. Bruce Molsky — Down in the Valley to Pray
5. Tony Trischka with Nate Sabat - Greenville Trestle High
6. Tim O’Brien — Walkin’ Boss
7. Laurie Lewis — Your Lone Journey
8. Jack Lawrence — Eight More Miles to Louisville
9. Alex Hargreaves — I’m Troubled
10. Bryan Sutton — Streamline Cannonball
11. Billy Strings — And Am I Born to Die
12. Mike Compton & Joe Newberry — Lone Pilgrim
13. Sierra Hull — What Does the Deep Sea Say
14. Jake Eddy — Muskrat
15. Alison Brown — The Last Thing On My Mind
These conversations about Doc and his music ranged between 20 and 30 minutes each and all included a song or two each guest shared from Doc’s repertoire plus stories (many first hand) and reflections. Subscribers to my school can access the whole archive but I wanted to share a brief excerpt from each guest.
