Tupac had been through a lot before he ever dropped a record. His incredible career and complicated life came to an end of September 13th, 1996, so it seemed like the right time to release this interview. I was a freshman at Redwood High in Marin County when I first heard the name Tupac Shakur. It was before the movie Juice was released. He had been living in Marin City down the road from Redwood and went to Tamalpais High down the road for a bit. I had heard he owed someone $50, I had heard he “still had my brothers jacket”, and things like that. I had not heard him rap, yet. While he is now a household name and one of the most influential artists in the history of music, he grew up in abject poverty with a mother who was addicted to crack cocaine. Only God Can Judge Me, written by Jeff Pearlman takes an unflinching look at Tupac’s life and goes into details that few know. I had the pleasure of interviewing the celebrated sports author to talk about the life and times of Tupac Shakur.
