Ukraine Released 30 Wild Horses Into Chernobyl — What Camera Traps Found 20 Years Later

#Rewilding #WildlifeRecovery #Chernobyl In nineteen ninety eight, a truck drove into the most contaminated landscape in Europe and let thirty wild horses out of the back. No fence. No feeding programme. No plan to check on them regularly. They were not ordinary horses. They were Przewalski horses, the only truly wild horse left on Earth, a species that had gone completely extinct in the wild and existed at that point only because a small number had been kept alive in captivity. So the plan, stated plainly, was to take one of the rarest large animals on the planet and release it, unsupported, into a nuclear exclusion zone. Twenty years later, camera traps counted one hundred and thirty seven horses in the Ukrainian sector, with at least four more across the border in Belarus. By twenty twenty three there were five separate harems. But this is not evidence that radiation is harmless to animals. It is not, and anyone telling you that question is settled in either direction is selling you something. Serious researchers disagree about it, and the argument is ongoing. What the zone actually demonstrates is something else, and it is bigger. Take the people out completely, across thousands of square kilometres, and hold it that way for decades. Because nobody released the rest of what turned up. A lynx study between twenty thirteen and twenty eighteen, covering around thirty percent of the zone, produced three hundred and two records, identified fifty individual animals, and estimated a population of fifty three to sixty eight. Wolf density inside the zone has been measured at around seven times that of neighbouring nature reserves. Not seven times farmland. Seven times actual protected reserves. The horses have been photographed sheltering inside the abandoned farm buildings of the people who had to leave. A population can grow while individuals inside it are being harmed, if the harm is smaller than the benefit of nobody hunting you. Both things can be true at once. The animals did not come back to a healed place. They came back to an empty one.
