Why is Amelia Earhart’s plane still missing? In July 1937, Amelia Earhart and navigator Fred Noonan vanished over the Pacific Ocean while searching for tiny Howland Island, and no confirmed wreckage of their Lockheed Electra has ever been found. In this documentary, Rusted Wings follows the final flight from Lae, New Guinea, the failed radio contact with the USCGC Itasca, and the largest search of its time. We also examine the three main theories: a crash into the ocean, a landing on Nikumaroro, and capture by Japanese forces, and explain why recovering the aircraft is so difficult, from extreme ocean depth to the sheer size of the search area. This is the story of a lost aircraft and its crew, told with respect for the people who never came home.
