This was another one of those ideas that I've been pushing around in my head for years. The plan was to make a vessel, a vase, that had the appearance of floating just above the surface. Originally, the supports were to be long slender legs, three of them, attached mid way up the body, and this plan stuck with me even as I began to glue up the wood for the vessel. But as work progressed this idea was ditched and a single arm at the back was substituted instead.
As usual the wood used here is Jarrah and the base and arm are aluminium. The base was cut from 25mm plate and the arm was made from 12mm bar stock. I hadn't given much thought to how the base would be polished and got a huge surprise when I realised that I couldn't polish the inside faces on the bench mounted buffing wheel. I also had great difficulty getting an even finish on the large flat sides of the arm. I spent all day Sunday trying to get the polishing to a satisfactory level but I'm afraid I failed here. But I only failed because of a self imposed deadline for finishing this project. So the inside faces of the 'foot' are less lustrous than ideal and the flat areas on the arm very patchy, but Kelly and my daughter like the vase so that is some consolation.
The wooden vessel however turned out far better than I could have imagined. I'm very happy with this part at least and to be honest, this is the main part of the project. The finish applied is a mixture of Tung oil and wax.
The glass vase sits just below the lowest part of the opening and can be taken out with two fingers pressing on the inside and then curling them upwards, very easy.
