John Richard "Pat" Matthews (1916 - 1972) was an American animator best known for his stretchy elastic-like animation.
Matthews began his career at Walt Disney Productions around 1938 as an assistant animator, working on shorts and features such as Pinocchio. He left during the 1941 strike to briefly join Screen Gems before landing at Walter Lantz Productions, where Matthews would truly shine as an animator, animating some of the most fluid and expressive scenes in many Woody Woodpecker and Andy Panda shorts.
In 1948, Lantz entered financial problems and was forced to temporarily close his studios, and Matthews would find employment at United Productions of America (UPA), his animation style standing out among the others. Unfortunately, Matthews underwent brain surgery during this period, and would become significantly slower as a result, being denied a directorial position at UPA because of this.
Matthews left UPA to join Mexican studio Dijubos Animados, S.A. around 1953, directing several anti-communist propaganda shorts along with Emery Hawkins. The remainder of Matthews career would see him traveling the world finding various odd jobs in the industry, before being killed in an accident in 1972, his final work being for a Spanish language version of Sesame Street.
