10 Things Puerto Rican Households Buy at the Dollar Store — And 5 They Never Touch
The dollar store can be one of the best places in town to save money — and one of the easiest places to accidentally overpay.
In this video, Nilda shares the 10 things her Puerto Rican household actually buys there, from greeting cards and party supplies to aluminum pans, glass jars, baskets, bread, reading glasses, and tall glass candles. She also walks past 5 categories she refuses to buy because the cheap price can hide lower quality, smaller quantities, or safety problems.
The biggest lesson is simple: when everything looks like it costs the same, pay attention to what can be made smaller, thinner, weaker, or shorter-lasting. Batteries, extension cords, cheap knives, tiny rolls, and undersized pantry items can end up costing more in the long run.
You’ll also hear the old household rule Nilda learned from her mother: buy the things that are simply “one thing for one price,” and be more careful with anything where the real value is hidden inside — ounces, square feet, battery life, copper, or steel.
And for Puerto Rican families, some of these items are more than bargains. The tall glass candles, jars for sofrito and pique, foil pans for arroz con gandules and pernil, and the memories of keeping a house running after Hurricane María all carry a deeper meaning.
What’s the one thing you always buy at the dollar store — and the one thing you learned never to buy?
