Manstein's Panzers Raced for Leningrad. Soviet Pincer Cost 8th Panzer 70 Tanks at Soltsy, 1941
On the fourteenth of July, nineteen forty-one, the tanks of the eighth Panzer Division rolled into the small Russian town of Soltsy and did not slow down. General Erich Brandenberger's crews had covered more than three hundred miles from the border in three weeks.
In this video:
Manstein's panzer corps outran its own army with no flank cover and one supply road
The Soviet Eleventh Army sprang a two-arm pincer and cut the road behind the Eighth Panzer
Surrounded and running on airlifted fuel, the division fought back west through Soltsy
About seventy of one hundred fifty tanks were lost, and the division went to the rear to refit
The first Barbarossa spearhead thrown back, and the whole northern drive halted on July nineteenth
