Finding Camp in Igoumenitsa (Epirus Offtrack Ep01)

Join me for a wild trip through Epirus, a coastal as well as mountainous and diverse region in Northwestern Greece. It might not be as famous as other destinations but there's one thing I know. It’s going to be amazing, each and every day. Syvota, Acheron Springs, the region of Tzumerka, the villages of Zagorochoria and the Vikos gorge will all surprise and make for a memorable journey. --- In this first episode, I arrive in Igoumenitsa after one day of ferrry from Ancona in Italy, impatient to unboard and start the real thing. We are in late afternoon and the mission, after a gas refill and a short bath in the sea, will be to find a place to spend the night. Soon enough a storm is brewing, thunder is heard and the weather feels very uncertain. But the dirt roads are calling and we head up to a hill overseeing the sea, which slowly reveals its rough terrain and unusual vegetation. The tension in this beautiful and desolate landscape and seemingly forgotten and lonely place is soon balanced with a sunset offering unreal views over the sea, with the island of Corfu in the background. I keep going and follow the track with the deep knowing that something is guiding me and I'll be fine, while a light rain is adding the last touch to this dreamy atmosphere. And then, it’s there, and without a doubt, this is the place. Everything is aligned for a quiet first night in Epirus. The excitement is high and there’s this feeling that this is just the beginning. An incredible journey awaits, with new landscapes, encounters, adventures and challenges, every single day. That’s the magic of Greece, the land where everything is possible.
