The concert of April 20, 1949 was held for the benefit of the City College of New York and was not broadcast; the almost complete recording survives. Only the final piece is missing, the Ride of the Walkyries. The Prometheus Overture returned with a certain frequency in the programs of the Maestro, who made two recordings in 1939 (BBC, unpublished for a long time) and 1944 (NBC). A live from 1951 is unfortunately compromised by recording defects (an annoying background hum). The Eroica was one of the symphonies that Toscanini conducted most frequently. This is his third to last performance (fourth to last counting the recording sessions at the end of 1949), a rather dry and concise performance when compared to the live on November 26 of the same year. The piece from Tannhäuser also appears frequently in the Maestro's programs, until the last concert in 1954 (stereo!) with the well-known events... According to many it was a piece in which he excelled. After he had stopped directing opera staging, Toscanini returned with some frequency to his favorite Scene III from Die Walküre. In addition to executions with NYP in 1932 (Althouse-Alsen; large fragments remain) and 1934, he performed it with NBC in 1941 (Melchior-Traubel, RCA) and then in 1947 and 1949, in both occasions with Rose Bampton and Set Svanholm. From the 1947 staging, there are ample glimpses of rehearsals, including the dress rehearsal, an execution from beginning to end (a "filata" - a “spin”?). A heartfelt thanks to Luciano Crivello, a great Toscaninian scholar, who kindly made this recording available.
