Location: New York Par: 70 Length: 7652 Style: Parkland The Round: Let me start by saying that this is a beast of a course and Robert did a great job in the design. I wasn’t expecting to play well but to my surprise I didn’t do that bad. Clean card on the front with one bird on the par three 8th and 2 bogies on the back but four birds on holes 10,12, 13 and 14 for a final score of 67 three under par. Designer’s notes: Bethpage Black…home of the 2002 and 2009 U.S. Open The story of the 2009 design by Robert Miller (based on original layout by Dominique Bois) Links 2003 is still a strong simulation, and with this in mind I decided to upgrade Bethpage Black for the 2009 U.S. open. Recent modifications such as widescreen and 1024 textures motivated me to redo the course. My goal here was to make the course even more realistic using skills that I have learned from the APCD over the past 4 years. What you see here in this version is the result of many personal rounds played at Bethpage over many years; each visit resulting in a trip to the APCD to get every exact detail of the course to perfection. This version is more than an upgrade. I didn’t just add new textures ,trees ,teeboxes etc… This course has been completely gutted down to the bare elevations and “unseamed” …Basically, there was only the layout ,elevations, and shapes from last version. … all new 2d plants and grass added…a complete rehaul to match the new textures…they blend together nicely giving a more natural appearance. Every tee box, bunker, fairway, rough has been completely reseamed and redone. I made it a mission to get the right grass planting to blend in with the underlying texture. The bunkers have about 6 seams and new high grass blends in certain areas, It took two months of experimental planting to get the grass just right. This project took well over a year of on and off apcd work to complete. To give you an idea of the labor, I spent more time on this project than Shinnecock and Pinehurst combined. All the textures are 1024 resolution…a hit or miss creation phase which went on for about 3 months. The rough, sand, dirt, paths, greens, fringe, tee boxes,divots,high grass, worn areas , buildings etc are all original textures created by myself, with MJ helping me on the fairway texture. A word about Dominique Bois, who initially layed out the course. With each real visit I make to the course I’m astonished on how accurate the terrain elevations are. They are just perfect. I would never have gotten into course design if I hadn’t stumbled upon this course at links corner…as well as him letting me upgrade the original 2002 design. A word about Mike Jones…his courses inspired me to take my courses to the next level. We exchanged a lot of ideas online via msn messenger while designing in the APCD. Each time I would open the APCD I’d open up messenger to see if he was around, designing his own stuff…and I’d usually catch him there. Mike was also the primary beta tester of the course and helped me with the base fairway texture which gave me fits.
