This is Vallam Kali — Kerala’s legendary traditional boat racing culture. The Nehru Trophy Boat Race is one of the most famous snake boat races in India and is held on Punnamada Lake in Alappuzha, Kerala. The highlight of the event is the magnificent Chundan Vallam, popularly known as the Snake Boat. These incredibly long traditional boats represent different villages and boat clubs, with teams competing for pride, glory and the prestigious Nehru Trophy. The history of the Nehru Trophy Boat Race goes back to 1952, when India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, visited Alappuzha and witnessed a traditional boat race. His enthusiasm for the event eventually led to the famous trophy and the race becoming one of Kerala’s most iconic annual sporting and cultural events.
