The global monetary system may be changing faster than most people realise.
In this livestream, I’ll take a close look at a new Financial Times article, “Booming Brics payments systems seek more cross-border links,” which examines how major BRICS economies are increasingly looking to connect their rapidly growing domestic payment systems across national borders.
India’s UPI and Brazil’s Pix are already enormous. According to the FT, instant-payment systems within the BRICS bloc have processed more than $10 trillion over the past 18 months, while UPI has more than 550 million users and Pix more than 170 million. The next step could be linking these systems internationally and allowing more trade and payments to take place directly in national currencies.
But there is a much bigger monetary question behind this story.
How do countries ultimately settle their accounts without constantly going through the US dollar? The FT itself raises the possibility of an alternative common reference or settlement asset — potentially involving gold or a basket of currencies.
We’ll discuss whether this represents another important step towards a more multipolar international monetary system, what it could mean for the dollar’s role in global trade and settlement, and why the development of alternative payment infrastructure could ultimately prove more significant than all the talk about creating a single “BRICS currency.”
We’ll also look at the implications for gold, the US Treasury market, the dollar-based financial system and the accelerating move towards monetary alternatives outside the traditional Western financial architecture.
As always, I’ll also be taking your questions and looking at the latest developments in the markets.
