The Changchun Film Studio—abbreviated as "Changying" and officially named Changying Group Co., Ltd.—was the first film studio established in the People's Republic of China and remains one of the country's largest film production centers.
The history of the Changchun Film Studio dates back to 1937, during the Japanese invasion of China, with the establishment of the "Manchuria Motion Picture Association" (abbreviated as "Man'ei"). At the time, this organization served as the central institution through which Japan implemented its policy of cultural colonization in Northeast China. Following Japan's surrender in 1945, the Chinese Communist Party took control of "Man'ei"; after operating for a period as the "Northeast Film Studio," the facility was officially renamed the Changchun Film Studio in 1955.
Changying pioneered the production of the first films in various genres within the New China era—including puppet films, feature films, and animated features. To date, the studio has produced and dubbed a cumulative total of over 3,000 films, giving rise to classic masterpieces that have influenced generations, such as *The White-Haired Girl*, *Battle on Shangganling Mountain*, *Five Golden Flowers*, and *Heroic Sons and Daughters*. Furthermore, the studio produced iconic film theme songs—such as "My Motherland" and "Ode to the Heroes"—that remain beloved national classics to this day. Concurrently, the studio cultivated a vast pool of exceptional directors, actors, and behind-the-scenes professionals, thereby serving as a pivotal foundational pillar of China's modern film industry.
The Changying Old Site Museum preserves the original studio buildings and features outdoor displays of various large-scale transportation props used in films. Inside, the museum houses exhibition zones dedicated to the original sound stages, film processing workshops, cinema halls, and music auditoriums. Visitors can also view vintage film cameras, projectors, movie props, original handwritten screenplays, classic film posters, and other historical artifacts.
