Why This Railway Was Built So Differently | Cromford & High Peak Railway

Why would anyone build a railway with a near 90-degree curve? In this episode of my journey along the Cromford and High Peak Railway, we discover that what first looks like bizarre engineering was actually the result of one of Britain's earliest railway builders adapting to an unforgiving landscape. Starting at Minninglow, we explore the famous Gotham Curve, one of the most distinctive features of the line, before continuing through Friden, Newhaven Tunnel, and on to Parsley Hay. Along the way we uncover forgotten sidings, quarry tramways, industrial remains and evidence of the industries that grew because this remarkable railway passed through the Derbyshire countryside. Unlike later Victorian railways, the Cromford and High Peak Railway was conceived during the canal age. Rather than carving a straight path across the landscape, its engineers followed the contours of the land, producing sharp curves, long straight sections and unusual alignments that still puzzle visitors today. As we approach Parsley Hay we also reach an important turning point, where later railway improvements began to replace many of the original pioneering features that made this route so unique.
