In 1587, about 115 English men, women and children were left on Roanoke Island. When their governor, John White, finally returned in 1590, they were gone, leaving one word carved on a post: CROATOAN. The word pointed south. The colonists themselves had said they would move fifty miles inland. We follow both directions: the code with no cross, the fort hidden under a patch on White's own map, and the two digs, on Hatteras Island and at "Site X" on the mainland, that may each hold part of the answer. ⏱ Chapters 00:00 One word on a post 00:38 Two directions, the same distance 01:55 The governor's three years 04:59 South, inland, famine, or the sea 08:07 What was under the patch 09:54 Hatteras and the hammerscale 12:10 Where did they go? 🔔 Subscribe to The Unsolved Files for documentaries on history's greatest unsolved mysteries. #LostColony #Roanoke #UnsolvedMysteries
