What should you really be designing a new product for? In this CMD Gold episode, we revisit episode 99, where Renaud Anjoran and reliability expert Andrew Amirnovin explore "Design for X (DfX)" — the practice of designing a product around specific objectives that go far beyond simply making it function. They examine 12 areas where products can be deliberately optimized, including shorter development times, crowdfunding, manufacturing, assembly, quality, packaging, reliability, maintainability, ergonomics, reducing unnecessary SKUs, and sustainability. You’ll learn why simplifying products, reducing part counts, using proven components, mistake-proofing assembly, considering the real-world use environment, and involving the right specialists early can help reduce development risks, production problems, redesigns, and costly failures later. One of the key lessons is that DfX is not about optimizing every possible objective equally. Different products have different priorities, and some objectives involve trade-offs. The important thing is to identify the right priorities early enough that you still have the freedom to change the design. 🎧 In this episode: 00:00:13 – Introduction: Revisiting Design for X 00:01:46 – Design for shorter development and time to market 00:04:26 – Designing for crowdfunding 00:07:12 – Design for Manufacturing and Design for Assembly 00:11:43 – What should product designers consider from the start? 00:15:57 – Fewer parts, standard components, and mistake-proofing 00:19:23 – Modularization and simplifying assembly 00:23:35 – Design for quality 00:30:52 – Why packaging must be considered during product design 00:34:06 – Design for reliability 00:42:58 – Design for maintainability 00:46:48 – Design for ease of use and ergonomics 00:47:07 – Design for fewer SKUs 00:47:53 – Design for sustainability 00:48:41 – Which DfX objectives matter most? 00:49:24 – How to implement Design for X in practice 00:50:53 – Using expert design reviews 00:51:23 – Adrian’s present-day takeaways 00:53:29 – Wrapping up Useful resources: • Agilian – DfX, Industrialization & NPI Support https://www.agiliantech.com/what-we-d... • Sofeast – New Product Introduction Process Guide https://www.sofeast.com/resources/new... • QualityInspection.org – How Good DFM and DFA Help with Production Cost & Quality https://qualityinspection.org/dfm-and... • QualityInspection.org – The Design for Reliability Process for Launching Reliable Products https://qualityinspection.org/the-des... • QualityInspection.org – Don’t Leave Packaging Until the End https://qualityinspection.org/dont-le... • Agilian – Why Test Components and New Products to Failure During NPI? https://www.agiliantech.com/blog/why-...
