How could workers survive a mega flood while trapped inside a tunnel? On August 26, 2026, a catastrophic flood tore through the Nepal–Tibet Himalayan region, sending mud, rock, trees and debris through river valleys and hydropower sites. But the engineering problem underground was very different from the destruction on the surface. A tunnel inside solid mountain rock may be separated from the worst impact of a debris-filled flood. But water still needs a physical path to enter — through portals, access routes, intakes, drainage systems or other connections. That creates a terrifying paradox. The mountain may shield workers from the first disaster. Then, if mud, boulders and debris bury the entrance, that same underground space can become a trap.
