Meet the 69th Jäger Company and their trusty mound of dirt. ⚔ It was a bright Monday morning when the order to cross the stream was given to the 24th Light Regiment to secure an advance position in an attempt to stop any potential advances from the enemy while the bulk of the army is still marching towards their designated positions. When the silhouettes of the enemy line started appearing on the horizon, the 24th Light Regiment positioned itself with its flanks anchored by the woods on the left and the stream to the right, narrowing the direction where the enemy can maneuver, fixing them in a tight open spot giving the 12lber battery an opportunity to cause heavy damage with each bombardment. However, the most interesting but quite a subtle detail when gazed upon by the naked eye is a small strip of dirt mound where the 69th Jäger Company specifically positioned themselves behind after discovering the strange terrain in the middle of the field. They don't have any idea at all that it will shield them from an impending annihilation. Half an hour later, the order to advance was heard from the opposing side, and the 24th Light Regiment quickly found itself in dire straits. The enemy, desperate to push back the advance party back to the other side of the stream, attacked with extreme ferocity. In an intense orchestra of musket, artillery fire, and a huge violent melee. The 69th Jäger Company firmly held their position, making potshots at approaching infantry formations, and even onrushing cavalries shielded by their unlikely but trusty earthy companion "the mound" from point blank musketry and the distant 18lber Licorne bombardments. Strangely enough, in the midst of the chaos, the 69th Jäger Company was utterly disregarded, adding to their fortune despite being in the deadliest position in the entire battle. Not a single charge came to dislodge them from their position, but you can't blame the enemy, once again, the mound is quite difficult to spot at the beginning. Maybe only the 69th Jäger is aware of this in the first place, especially in the middle of a battle. "I was even surprised that they remained standing after the same ground changed hands several times", exclaimed their commander. Eventually, the enemy lines started to falter and fell back after being exposed for hours to the deadly bombardments of the 12lber battery. Then the entire left flank advanced en masse to secure the initiative which the 69th Jäger Company joined, continuing their harassment of withdrawing infantry formation, and ultimately drove the entire enemy army out from the field. ------------------------------------------------------------- Hope you enjoyed reading this story depicting the stalwart folks of the 69th Jäger Company, and their earthy friend. Just found it amusing when I viewed the replay, and was wondering why the enemy fire can't finish off their unit when they're already half towards their breaking point, and at the same time why they can't fire across to retaliate, then I saw this tiny strip of elevated ground "The mound". 🤣 Anyways, I had fun writing this and looking forward for more cool random events in my future battles to share with you. #napoleonicwars #linesofbattle #warstories #prussia See less
