Charlotte drives across southern New Hampshire — three covered bridges including the oldest one in the world, the only president the state ever produced, and a walk through Portsmouth that goes well past the postcard version. #crtsg ——— "Live free or die: Death is not the worst of evils." — General John Stark, toast written for a Battle of Bennington reunion, July 31, 1809 ——— If you have one day: start in Contoocook. The railroad bridge there was rebuilt in 1889 and is the oldest surviving covered railroad bridge in the world — you can still walk through it — and Concord is only twenty minutes away, which puts the Pierce Manse, the State House and the Portsmouth seacoast in comfortable reach of a single day. In Concord, Charlotte visits the Pierce Manse and the gravesite of Franklin Pierce, the only U.S. president from New Hampshire. In Portsmouth she walks Strawbery Banke, Prescott Park and the old waterfront — and follows stops on the Portsmouth Black Heritage Trail, which marks the wharf where enslaved Africans were brought ashore and sold, and tells the story of the twenty enslaved men who petitioned the New Hampshire legislature for their freedom in 1779. It's the harder half of the same history the covered bridges and the state motto celebrate, and it's marked in bronze a few steps from the tourist waterfront. The day ends inland in Nashua at Mine Falls Park and Greeley Park. ______ 🎒 ABOUT THIS CHANNEL Kid-friendly travel guides, from a kid!
