Tarantella by Loreta Fin | SPO Chamber Orchestra | Australian Composer | ASBOF

Performed by SPO Chamber Orchestra at the ASBOF 2026 event. This performance was one of three pieces presented by SPO Chamber Orchestra in the Senior String Ensemble category. We are proud to share that the ensemble was awarded a Gold Award for their performance of this piece and the other two works. Tarantella This energetic original work is written in the Southern Italian dance-style. It is in compound duple time, and uses A minor tonality. Inner parts need to pitch the G# leading notes carefully, as do the celli, with extended 4th fingers. These occur mostly in simpler rhythms, to allow the hand time to open out. String crossings should be smooth, keeping the pulse steady on the dotted quarter notes. Take care with bow lengths and placement in bar 21 and similar (Vln 1 and 2). The B section is in C Major, making the piece ideal to teach relative majors and minors, as well as Ternary Form. The accelerando in the final A section makes for an exciting ending. The piano part is essential for the off-beat accompaniment and would even sound better if played on a Piano Accordion or Keyboard with Accordion voice. Loreta Fin Loreta Fin AM studied violin at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, with Faina Krel, (Sydney Symphony Orchestra) and before that at St Ursula’s College Kingsgrove, with Sr Margaret (Peg) Short, OSU and Emily Finn (former SSO violinist). Loreta was a first violinist with the Sydney Youth Senior Symphony Orchestra, under Richard Gill AO, and later tutored and conducted orchestras within the Sydney Youth Orchestra Association. She taught at Sydney Grammar School before moving to Brisbane in 1988, where she was employed by Somerville House and All Hallows’ Schools. Loreta taught at Somerville House Girls’ School in Brisbane for 35 years and was full-time Director of Strings from 1992 to 2021. During that time, she conducted and oversaw a program of over 200 string students and led 3 successful tours of Italy, Austria and France. She was also the musical director for the school’s Musical Theatre productions for 25 years. All of her ensembles were successful in competitions, consistently gaining first places in eisteddfods and Platinum Awards at all six levels at the Queensland Music Fest competition.
