Deep in southern Palawan, the Taaw’t Bato have developed a way of life unlike almost anywhere else in the Philippines. Often described as a Filipino tribe that lives inside a volcano, the reality is far more complex. In Singnapan Valley, some Taaw’t Bato families have traditionally moved between agricultural fields and limestone caves as the seasons change. When heavy rains raise the water in the valley, the caves can become an important place of shelter, food, and community life. But the cave is only the beginning of the story. This documentary explores how the Taaw’t Bato organize life around the landscape, how seasonal movement shapes food and family relationships, how the bulun-bulun system connects households through sharing, and how trade has linked this remote community to the wider world. We also look at the moment the Taaw’t Bato entered official records in 1978, the arrival of government services, the difficult negotiation over education, and the story of Juda Diklay, who became the first member of her community to earn a college degree. The deeper story is not simply about people living in caves. It is about how a community turns a difficult landscape into a home — and how that meaning of home changes as each generation faces new choices. From the fields to the caves, from inherited knowledge to formal education, this is the story of the Taaw’t Bato of Palawan. #TaawtBato #Palawan #Philippines #IndigenousCulture #HowPeopleLive #CultureDocumentary #HumanCulture #Anthropology #PalawanPhilippines #Documentary
