Dak Bapla is a vital, sacred water-fetching ritual performed during a traditional Santhali
wedding (Bapla).
"Dak Bapla Enech" (or Dak Bapla Enach) refers to a highly traditional water-fetching wedding ritual and its accompanying folk dance performed by the Santal community.
In the Santhali language, "Dak" means water, "Bapla" means wedding, and "Enech" (or Anaj/Enach) means Dance. Together, it translates to the "Water-Wedding Dance".
This customary event involves the ceremonial collection of water from a nearby pond, river, or water source, accompanied by vibrant community celebrations.
Core Context & Practices :-
• The Ritual:- This dance takes place during a vital, ceremonial part of a Santal marriage where
women and relatives go to a nearby pond, river, or water source to fetch holy water (Dak) for
the wedding rituals.
• The Dance Style:- The primary dance style performed during this ritual is the Dong (or Dong
Enech), which is specifically reserved for Santal weddings. It features lively, rhythmic steps,
synchronization, and expressive hand movements.Women and youth perform the traditional
Dong dance, a celebratory rhythm unique to Santhali weddings.
• Music & Instruments:- The celebration is powered by traditional Santal musical instruments
like the Tumdak' (madal drum) and Tamak' (kettle drum), accompanied by vibrant, festive
wedding songs.
Water Gathering:- Family members and village women carry decorated brass pitchers to
collect sacred water.
Community Procession: -The entire village walks together to the water body, reinforcing
communal unity and joy.
