Running is fundamentally a single-leg sport, and while there is a benefit to doing bilateral exercises like deadlifts and squats, the benefits you get from single-leg work really make it worth your time to integrate these exercises into your strength routine.
So today, it's my three favourite single leg exercises as a follow-along. So let's get right to it. You will need a matt and something to step up onto; today, I have this keen bench out here next to the ocean.
Front step-ups
Standing in front of an elevated platform, I used a bench. Step up with one foot, driving your heel into the platform, then drive your opposite knee up into the air until you're in a running position
Single-leg glute bridge
Lie on your back with your heels rooted to the floor, hip-width apart. Extend one leg straight, Tighten your abs and glutes and thrust your hips into the air until you form a straight line from your shoulders to your foot on the extended leg.
Rear-foot elevated split squat
Start in a couch stretch, and then push from your rooted heel until your knee is at the height of the bench behind you. Slowly return your kneed toward the floor. It is OK if your knee does not touch down.
